Make the Most of Each Workday With These Simple Tips

As the old adage goes, there are only so many hours in a day—and if you are devoting roughly eight of them to work Monday through Friday, it is natural to want to make the most of this considerable chunk of time. This is especially true if you feel like your tasks have expanded beyond the traditional workday and you are trying to get as much done as possible to achieve a sustainable work-life balance.

Whether you are struggling to fit it all in or you simply want to focus on making the most of each day you sit down to work, we have some great tips to help you maximize the way you use your time. If you are ready to stop “getting by” and start feeling accomplished, these tips may come in handy!

How to Make the Most of Each Workday

Avoid unnecessary distractions. While there may be some urgent things that pop up throughout your regular workday, in many cases, emails, private messages and other notifications serve as distractions more than they serve an immediate function. Instead of responding to things in real-time, eliminate distractions by setting aside buckets of time to respond to emails and inquiriesand use the rest for uninterrupted focus.

Do the things you don’t want to do first. Regardless of how much you love your job, there are always going to be things you do not necessarily like about it that still have to be done. Having these tasks looming over your head can feel daunting, and if you leave them for the end of the day, you may even unconsciously procrastinate instead of getting them done. While it may seem counterintuitive, start your day with your least favorite tasks so you know they are completed and you no longer have to think about them.

Take regular breaks. Taking a break to get more done may seem like silly advice, but it really is not! While the typical work day is eight hours, it is impossible to spend a full eight hours focusing solely on work. Taking a mental (and physical) break by getting up, walking around, eating lunch or doing some other activity that is completely unrelated to work can help you keep your brain engaged when it is time to focus on that next task.
