Are you a dreamer, risk-taker, or doer?

I am a dreamer, risk-taker, and doer together. The three complement each other and are important characteristics for all successful entrepreneurs. Successful entrepreneurs have a dream/vision of what they want to do and are willing to take the financial and emotional risks necessary to achieve their dream. Then, they are motivated to do what is required to make the dream/vision a reality.

Two of my favorite quotations for entrepreneurs come from Henry David Thoreau and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” (Thoreau)

“Whatever you can do or dream you can—begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” (Goethe)

As fellow entrepreneurs, we would love to hear about your business.

I am an attorney. I have been a sole practitioner for over 30 years and have a well-established presence in the legal community. Over the years, I have been fortunate to develop relationships with other attorneys and service providers (such as investigators, paralegals, and experts in a variety of disciplines) that allow me to provide a high level of legal service, yet allow me to remain flexible and able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

I have a litigation practice. This means I go to court. I am not a fan of using the court system to resolve problems. Parties in dispute can almost always find a more acceptable—and less expensive— resolution outside the courtroom. This is true for both criminal and civil cases. There are competing interests on both side of any dispute. Each side usually believes they are right. For one side to win does not necessarily mean the other side has to lose.

I focus my practice on personal injury, criminal defense, and small businesses, especially new businesses and startups. Each of these areas involves working with people who have real problems, some of them exceedingly complicated. A final resolution to most of these problems requires a working knowledge of not only the law but also other disciplines.

At the end of the day, most legal problems are people problems. The resolution of most people problems requires the ability to look outside the law (as well as within) when working towards a result. I bring a variety of non-legal resources to the problems that confront my clients.

Thanks to Office Evolution, I do not have a large monthly overhead. My primary office is at my home and has been for the past 25 years. I’m mobile. I use technology. I’m available to make “house calls.” Most importantly, I have a people-focused practice that gives me the opportunity to interact with a variety of people with many different human experiences. The small businesses I work with are represented by people— not shares of stock.

Who is your ideal customer?

I help people who have been charged with a criminal offense, protect people that have been injured or killed through the fault of someone else, and help when disputes and lawsuits come up in the small business world. I know lots of lawyers, so even if I can’t help someone, I can connect him or her with an attorney who can help. Please feel free to reach out!

What are your top tips for entrepreneurial success?

My top tips for being successful are—Believe in yourself. Be authentic. Deliver value. Be happy. Be humble. Communicate and, more importantly, listen. Approach all problems with your client as a team rather than as an expert with a client. Make use of technology.
