Employers Should Embrace Remote Work for Employees

It has been 14 weeks since the shelter-in-place (SIP) orders came down on us all. Employees who could do their jobs remotely were suddenly forced into creating makeshift offices at their homes—those lucky ones who already had a well-equipped, dedicated home office were rare. Most people had to shoehorn an office into different corners of their home while juggling demands of children, spouses, and roommates who also had to do their work from home.  

Before the pandemic, many managers had not fully embraced remote work—worry about how to manage employees who weren’t physically present was the biggest and most-often cited reservation. How could they manage a workplace they couldn’t see? 

With the onset of the pandemic, that changed in an instant. Employers had little choice but to count on their employees to figure out how to juggle all the variables and still do their job.  And voila!  Employees rose to the challenge and some businesses saw increased productivity, especially those businesses who already allowed for some remote work.

Of course, there were obstacles and lessons learned the hard way. Now is the time to reap the benefit of this hard-won experience and tweak and fine-tune the remote work model. Allowing for remote work is certainly part of most employers’ immediate game plan. Think of it as a way to reward your employees while saving you money— a true win/win!
