4 Tips for Your Holiday Work Party

Getting everything just right for a company event takes time and patience.  Here are our top tips to help you enjoy a great party.

1. Choose an off-site location.

Getting everyone into party mode can be tricky if your event is in the office space where they work each day. By choosing a neutral location for your work event, you’re more likely to get people engaged and relaxed.

And for companies that are fully remote, you need a central spot to host your holiday work party. Be sure to pick a location with plenty of parking and access to services such as Uber or Lyft.

While choosing someplace off the beaten path may be tempting, those locations may not allow your workers to utilize these ride-share programs. And if alcohol is involved, you need to have safe transportation options available.

2. Book your caterer early.

Finding an excellent caterer who is available on your date gets difficult if you wait very long. Try to set the location and caterer by the beginning of October if possible.

Finger foods and appetizers are usually the simplest options for holiday parties. And most caterers can offer choices for different eating plans, such as vegetarian or gluten-free.

3. Choose a theme and send invites.

Themed parties tend to be more engaging and help put people at ease so that the event feels festive. And having a theme makes it easier to coordinate invitations, decorations, and food.

If a theme doesn’t quite feel right, at least set a dress code expectation for your workers. Is it an ugly sweater party? Is it a black-tie affair? Be sure everyone gets the memo on what is expected.

Once you set the time, location, and theme, let everyone know the details. Even a quick “save-the-date” email blast will let people get it on their calendars.

4. Consider a January party.

There is no rule that says you must have your work party between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Some of the most fun, relaxed work parties happen in January!

If you have flexibility in your schedule, booking a January event has many benefits:

  • You don’t have to compete with Christmas events.
  • People are less likely to be traveling.
  • More availability for venues and caterers.
  • Some services cost less in January than they do during the holidays.

January work parties tend to draw more people who stay longer because they aren’t also trying to keep up with all of their other holiday obligations. Something to consider!
