Returning to Work Safely: 10 Tips

The new normal is learning to live with this coronavirus in our midst.  New rules in the playbook have been updated to help businesses and workers keep working safely.  Businesses need to keep operating, and employees need to keep working to maintain a living.  Returning to work safely can be done several ways.  Consider these 10 tips to be helpful guidelines.

  1. Implement a screening policy.

Forehead thermometers should be fairly easy to find, unlike some other items in these times, and temperatures can be taken before entering a building or meeting space.  Ask questions, such as “Have you been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19?”  “Have you been coughing a lot recently?” “Do you have more body aches than normal?”  Someone who doesn’t feel well should definitely stay at home.

  2. Assess your working space.

Identify areas that might be prone to heavy congestion or are typically high-traffic areas.  Adjust all spacing as much as possible to accommodate the CDC’s social distancing guidelines.  When you rent Downtown Tampa office space, you can find space large enough to accommodate social-distancing needs.  Office space can provide all the amenities workers need to conduct business, even inclusive of light refreshments.

  3. Mask up and wash your hands.

Probably the most important component to keeping yourself and others safe is to wear a mask at all times, unless you are eating or drinking, of course.  Put your mask back on when you’ve finished with your meal or refreshments.  Wash your hands often and wash them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.  These two very simple actions can make a world of difference.

  4. Open windows, allow air in, and ensure open spaces.

Returning to work safely can be done more effectively when you are able to be outside or have access to windows or open-air workspaces.  Fans can also be used to help circulate air.  These measures can help minimize the spread of the virus.

  5. Telework.

If you can remain at home and still get your work done, that is another good solution, especially with all the virtual meeting methods available to help all members of your business stay in touch.

  6. Re-assess janitorial standards.

Ensure janitorial services are up-to-par and that all the correct sanitation products and procedures are being used that are necessary to keep everyone safe.

  7. Post reminder signs.

The coronavirus has been around for many months now, but it is still fairly new in the daily scheme of things and it can be easy for people to forget some of the necessary precautions that should be taken.  Place reminder signs in strategic locations that will help people remember to wear a mask, wash hands, use hand sanitizer, and wipe down work areas after use.

  8. Use digital applications.

Many digital tools were designed to promote a higher level of productivity.  They can also be useful in reducing the number of face-to-face meetings needed when discussing workflow and other matters.  Make use of digital apps to steer away from high-contact areas.

  9. Have a contract tracing strategy.

If someone in your workforce does come down with a case of Covid-19, there needs to be an established method of alerting those who may have come into contact with that person.  The safety of each person needs to be at the forefront of a return to work.

  10. Have patience and be flexible.

These are trying times and there is a need to be cognizant of the toll that stress takes on everyone.  No one is immune to trying to find a way to cope; therefore, patience and flexibility can help relieve stress on everyone.
