Inside the 9–5: What It’s Like to Be a Director of Community Experience

Office Evolution coworking space and private office environment.

If you’ve ever stepped into Office Evolution Boulder and instantly felt at home, you have come across the work of Director of Community Experience, Christie McMillon. Her job title says it all; she’s the person behind the welcoming atmosphere, smooth operations, and the sense of community that makes the workspace thrive.

“Director of Community Experience sums up what I do intuitively,” Christie says. “From the candy in the dish to the way members are greeted, I’m directing their experience to be a good one.”

The Rhythm of the Day

No two days ever look the same for Christie, and that’s exactly how she likes it. Between managing mail, meetings, coffee, and community events, there’s always something happening. One moment she’s helping a member move into a new office, the next she’s organizing an event or tracking down supplies.

“Let’s just say there’s never ‘nothing to do,’” she laughs.

Her go-to tool for staying organized lately is Notion (she’s loving its AI features), and her biggest recent wins include helping members expand into larger offices as their teams grow. A true reflection of the community’s success as a whole.

She also finds joy in the little, often unseen details, like keeping scuff marks at bay. “Constantly touching up the walls with the magic eraser is part of my routine,” she jokes. “Scuff marks are my nemesis!”

“Your space reflects your mind,” she says, so she makes sure everything feels tidy, fresh, and ready for productivity. From checking conference rooms to restocking coffee and snacks, the goal is always to create an environment that helps members feel supported and inspired the moment they walk in.

When the day winds down, Christie recharges through nature, art, and quality time with family. Yoga, hiking, and even a good thrift outing help her stay balanced and inspired.

Leading with Intention

Christie’s day starts before most members arrive. Each morning, she walks through the space, spritzing her handmade essential oil blend (currently Lemon Verbena) and greeting the workspace itself. “Good morning, Space!” It’s her way of setting an intentional tone for the day.

“Above all else, it’s about how people feel,” she says. “Do they feel heard, seen, cared for, and supported? That’s what truly matters.”

But while she keeps operations running smoothly, she’s also constantly building connections. “Getting to know members is one of the best parts of my role,” she says. Whether it’s chatting over coffee, scheduling Member Spotlights, or even baking cookies in the toaster oven to draw people out of their offices, Christie looks for small ways to spark meaningful conversations.

The Heart of the Role

At its core, Christie’s job is about balance, which means keeping operations running efficiently while cultivating a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Her favorite moments, though, are when members connect with each other. “When I hear them realize they have twins the same age or mutual friends…that’s when I think, this is why I love my job.”

Christie directs the community experience by genuinely caring about the well-being of everyone who walks through the door. She lives by one guided belief:

“This isn’t a dress rehearsal. I know my purpose. While I am here on this earth, I get to put love out into the world. You never know what someone is carrying, even when they are smiling. I consider it a privilege to support our members and our team, so I strive every day to show up with gratitude and a spirit of tenacity to do my best.”

At OE Boulder, that love shows up in every detail. From the fresh scent of Lemon Verbena in the morning air to the laughter shared over cookies in the kitchen. Christie is the reason the space feels like a true community. That’s what makes her not just a manager, but a Director of the Community Experience.
