The Fairfax County board approved a project to put an indoor ski slope in Lorton. The Fairfax Peak Project will be one of the largest indoor ski slope facilities in the world with it’s 450,000 square foot center. The largest ski slope would run about 1,700 square feet.
This new facility approved by the board of supervisors is expected to create more than 1,300 new jobs. The local tax revenue from this is estimated around $1 million. Fairfax County is in agreement with Alpine-X which is an indoor ski-development company for the buildout. The new ski-slope in Lorton would be built upon the city’s old landfill which closed in 1996.
The plan is to have a 100 luxury room hotel at the base of the slope. The hope is to bring up to 400,000 visitors a year to generate sales, hotel and property taxes for the county of Fairfax. The property would be part of a public-private partnership where the county would lease the land to Alpine-X who would then build, own, and manage the facility. The plan is to generate significant economic and recreational benefits for Fairfax County. While the project has been approved by the board it does not guarantee completion of the project, only that Alpine-X will conduct the necessary research to ensure it is a viable option. The project would take anywhere from 36-48 months.
