What is a notary, you may ask?

Well, let me tell you all about the notary!

According to Wikipedia, “A notary is a person authorized to perform acts in legal affairs, in particular witnessing signatures on documents. The form that the notarial profession takes varies with local legal systems.” and according to Michigan.gov, “A notary public is an officer commissioned by the Michigan Secretary of State to serve as an unbiased and impartial witness on business, public, and other documents. The most common function of the notary is to prevent fraud by attesting to the identity of a person signing a document.”

What does that mean in normal English? Well, basically a notary is a person that verifies you are the person authorized to sign a legal document, especially in a transaction that crosses state lines or where all parties cannot be in the same room together.

Some examples of folks that would use a notary:

• Someone signing up for mail services at Office Evolution is required to sign and have notarized paperwork authoring Office Evolution to receive and distribute their mail
• Some health care and retirement paperwork require notarized forms to be submitted when the benefits are accessed.
• Transactions including the sale of a home or property require notarization before being submitted to government and banking agencies.

What do you need to bring to get your documents notarized?

Each state has its own requirements for what forms of identification are needed for document notarization, however, there are several forms of ID that are accepted in most states. These include:

• ​US driver’s license
• U.S. passport
• Armed forces ID
• Other government-issued ID

You must always make sure your ID is up to date in order to be considered valid for notarization.

We also strongly encourage notary services to be scheduled in advance with as much notice as possible but is available on a walk-in or on short notice. But having a notary in the same office as you work could mean the difference between closing a deal and losing a client.
