Why community may be the one thing you can’t evaluate during an office tour.

When people begin searching for office space, they usually create a mental checklist.

Is there enough parking?

How much does it cost each month?

Is the internet reliable?

Do I need a private office or would coworking work?

Can I book conference rooms when clients visit?

How long is the commute?

These are all important questions. At Office Evolution Troy, we answer them every day.

But after owning a coworking space for several years and watching hundreds of professionals build their businesses here, I’ve come to believe there is another factor that deserves just as much attention.

Ironically, it’s also the hardest one to evaluate during a tour.

Community.

Not networking.

Not happy hours.

Not forced collaboration.

Just the people you’ll spend forty hours a week around.

Because while you can compare rent, amenities, and office sizes on a spreadsheet, you won’t fully understand your work environment until you’ve lived in it.

The Things You Don’t Think to Ask

When someone tours our workspace, they notice the obvious things.

They see clean private offices.

They notice our conference rooms.

They ask about mail services, internet speed, and parking.

What they can’t see is what happens on an ordinary Tuesday morning.

Someone pours a cup of coffee and asks another member how their weekend was.

Someone celebrates landing a new client.

Another member asks for a recommendation for a plumber or an accountant.

A parent shares a funny story about their toddler before heading back into their office.

None of these conversations last very long.

Most are only a few minutes.

One of our members—I’ll call her Mary—works in the insurance industry.

Technically, she could do her job almost anywhere.

She could sit in a private office by herself all day and accomplish every task on her list.

But now that I know her, I simply can’t imagine that being fulfilling.

Her office gives her the quiet she needs to focus.

The people around her give her the little moments of connection that make coming to work enjoyable.

I don’t think she came here looking for community.

I think she came looking for office space.

Community just happened.

Sometimes a Five-Minute Conversation Is Exactly What You Need

Another member writes proposals for government contracts.

Her work requires incredible concentration.

The proposals are detailed, technical, and often carry enormous financial implications.

She’s also a relatively new mom.

Like many parents, she could probably work from home.

But she knows herself well enough to know that it wouldn’t be the right environment.

An energetic toddler and deep-focus proposal writing don’t mix very well.

Instead, she has a quiet private office where she can fully concentrate.

Every now and then, she’ll step into the kitchen for coffee.

We’ll spend five minutes talking about parenting, developmental milestones, or whatever new adventure our children have decided to take us on that week.

Then she heads back into her office.

Those conversations aren’t long.

They aren’t planned.

They certainly aren’t why she rents an office.

But sometimes five minutes of adult conversation is exactly what someone needs before diving back into several more hours of demanding work.

As a parent myself, I understand that feeling.

Sometimes a brief reset makes you more productive than pushing through another hour at your computer.

Learning From the People Around You

Not every benefit of community is personal.

Some are professional.

One of our members works in media and content creation.

He’s incredibly outgoing and naturally curious.

Over the years, he’s told me many times that simply working around other professionals has made him a better business owner.

Not because anyone sat him down for formal coaching.

Not because he attended networking events every day.

But because of hundreds of small conversations.

An insurance professional helped him understand risks he hadn’t considered.

They’re never forced.

They’re simply part of sharing a professional space with thoughtful, ambitious people.
