I’ve Had the Same Mailing Address for Almost 20 Years

I’ve personally had a PO Box for almost 20 years. I originally got it because I was living at home with my parents, and my mother had a habit of throwing away my mail.

Obviously, not everyone needs a separate mailing address because someone in their household is arbitrarily deciding which pieces of mail are worthy of their attention. But that experience taught me something I’ve carried into adulthood: I like controlling my own mail.

Over those 20 years, I’ve lived with my parents, owned my own condo and now live with my husband. That’s three different residential addresses, and I’ve never had to make a massive project out of changing my default mailing address.

My mail just goes where it has always gone.

And it is glorious.

Think about how many organizations eventually accumulate your address. Banks. Credit cards. Insurance companies. Professional organizations. Alumni associations. Government agencies. Medical providers. Subscriptions. Memberships. Old accounts you forgot existed.

You may not receive much mail from most of them, but that’s exactly the problem. They’re easy to forget when you move.

I recently saw a social media video from a woman who said she was living in an apartment that had previously belonged to actor Jason Segel. She was apparently still receiving pieces of his mail and publicly trying to figure out what she should do with them.

It was funny as a social media video, but the underlying problem isn’t particularly funny.

Your old address now belongs to a stranger.

Most strangers will probably write “return to sender” and move on with their lives. But privacy and identity theft aren’t areas where I particularly enjoy relying on probably.

This can matter even more for public figures, executives, higher-net-worth individuals or anyone who simply prefers to keep more separation between their private residence and the rest of their life.

A professional mailing address doesn’t replace your legal residential address when an organization requires one. But when an organization simply needs somewhere to send your mail, there can be real value in having a stable address that isn’t tied to wherever you happen to be sleeping this year.

Agreements are 30-day, and the basic plan accommodates up to two names or entities. That could be you and your spouse, one person and one business, or another combination that fits your situation.

Once you’re established, the goal is to make mail management boring.

That’s a compliment.

You don’t need another thing to manage.

If you’re overseas, I don’t want you spending your time worrying about what’s happening inside your mailbox in Troy. I want you experiencing wherever you’ve chosen to live.

Check in with us periodically. Send an email. Give us a call. We can tell you what’s accumulating and, when needed, send you a photo so you can tell us what you want done with it.

Maybe we shred something.

Maybe we throw away the junk mail.

Maybe we forward an important envelope.

Maybe you want something opened and scanned. Scanning starts at $1 per envelope for up to five pages, with some restrictions on items such as checks and HIPAA-sensitive materials.

And over time, we can learn your preferences.

If you tell us, “I never want these catalogs,” we can keep that instruction on file. The next time a stack arrives, we don’t need to create another project for you.

That’s the hospitality part of what we do.

We Are Not a Package Storage Facility

There is one important distinction: this service is designed primarily for mail management, not long-term package storage.

We can and do accept packages for clients, including items that need a signature, but we have limited storage space. Packages and unusually large accumulations of mail need to be picked up, forwarded, disposed of or otherwise handled. Storage fees may apply.

If you’re backpacking through Europe for two years, please don’t have two years of Amazon orders shipped to us.

If you insist on doing that, we’ll happily discuss renting you an actual office and filling it to the ceiling.

For the basic mail plan, think correspondence rather than storage.

It’s especially valuable for the mail you weren’t expecting.

You know when you’ve ordered a new pair of shoes. You don’t necessarily know when an old professional association, bank, insurance company or government agency is going to decide it needs to send you something.

That’s the mail we’re here to help you manage.

You Don’t Even Have to Be in Michigan to Get Started

This is one of the products we most commonly sell completely remotely.

You can sign up online. We assign your mailbox and provide the required USPS Form 1583 documentation. Because we’re receiving U.S. Postal Service mail on your behalf, USPS requires appropriate identification and authorization.

Some clients come into Office Evolution Troy to complete that process. Others complete the required notarization wherever they currently are and send the documentation back to us.

You could establish your Troy mailing address without ever walking through our front door.

And that’s kind of the point.

Your life can happen somewhere else.
