Can Changing Your Working Area Change Your Productivity? | Office Evolution

Chances are, you are familiar with the “mid-morning slump,” the “post-lunch slump,” or the “end of day slump” tropes, but it is true that there are likely many times throughout the day where we simply do not feel like doing work. Regardless of how excited or engaged you are at your job, maintaining consistent focus and continually doing your best can be a difficult task.

There are plenty of “productivity hacks” out there designed to help people get more done, but if you are already feeling unmotivated, the thought of adding yet another thing into your day may seem unsurmountable. However, today we are going to look at the simple concept of giving yourself varied options of work areas—one of the simplest, and perhaps most effective, ways to give your productivity a boost.

How Changing Your Location Can Change Your Productivity

Giving yourself a change of scenery can do wonders for your attention span, and even your mood, too. Our brains are designed to respond well to new and novel stimuli in our environments, which means that staring at the same four walls each day can eventually begin to take its toll on our productivity, whether we realize it or not.

Additionally, changing up your scenery can also snap you out of negative learned behaviors, such as procrastinating or slacking off, as these are ruts we can easily fall into when tied to a single space. Simply setting an intention, such as, “I’m going to get a lot done in this location,” can keep you on track and ready to tackle your to-do list.

A strategy that many people find helpful is taking advantage of different working areas to tackle different things. For example, you may want to do focused work while sitting at a desk, while answering emails may be better completed in a comfortable arm chair or in a common area of your office space that features a nice level of ambient noise. In this way, you can match your tasks to your surroundings and keep your brain engaged throughout the workday.
