A Guide to Coworking Space Etiquette

Even with the world pretty much open again post-COVID, more than a third of eligible employees are working remotely. Some are doing so full-time, and others periodically. Coworking spaces are popular choices for staying productive with a remote or hybrid work schedule. However, knowing coworking space etiquette is important to make the most of your experience.

At Office Evolution in Hillsboro, OR, we’re thrilled to support remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs. Whether you’re looking for a mailing address, a conference room, or a private office, we have a space to meet your needs. To learn more, please call us at 971-297-1444 or book your tour online.

Coworking Space Etiquette Helps Everyone Work Better

Sharing space with many other workers can be energizing and fun, but it also requires everyone to follow some best practices. Here are the top etiquette tips for coworking spaces.

Take time to learn the expectations.

Coworking space etiquette requires communication and attentiveness. Image of three women eating donuts in shared office kitchen space.

When you sign up for a shared coworking space, be sure to note important details such as the following:

  • Hours of access/operation
  • Kitchen use
  • Using or purchasing available snacks or drinks
  • Protocol for using shared areas such as “phone booths” for Zoom calls
  • Who to contact with questions or concerns

Pay attention to noise and volume.

Because of the open, shared spaces in coworking offices, volume matters. Be mindful of how loud you are when taking calls or running virtual meetings. And avoid having any calls on speaker phone when you are in communal areas.

Most coworking places have small private rooms to take a quick call. If you need more time, ask how you can book a private office for an hour or two to avoid interrupting other workers.

It’s also important to pay attention to how loud your music is in your earbuds or headphones. Often, noise leaks out to those around you, disturbing their work time.

Be mindful of your time.

Most coworking memberships include the opportunity to book a conference room or a private office for a set amount of time. When you use these spaces, be sure to watch the time so that you wrap up and leave the room when needed. Often, another member will have it booked after you.

Clean up after yourself.

The communal nature of coworking requires diligence in keeping the space tidy and usable for everyone. Remember to throw out your trash and take care of any dishes you use before leaving. If something breaks or gets damaged, let the owner or manager know right away so they can fix it.

Be part of the community.

One of the great benefits of coworking spaces is the chance to meet new people and network with other professionals. If your membership location offers events and networking opportunities, take advantage of them!

At Office Evolution in Hillsboro, OR, we have coffee chats, happy hour events, and learning opportunities for our members. Participating in these activities can help break up your work day and connect with other workers or business owners.

We love supporting dreamers, doers, and creators here in our office. If you’re ready to claim a coworking membership or your own private office, give us a call at 971-297-1444 or book a tour online today.
